Android 2.3

Android 2.3 is here !

http://developer.android.com/index.html

http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.3-highlights.html

I loved the idea of the NFC

Near Field Communications (NFC)

The platform's support for Near Field Communications (NFC) lets developers get started creating a whole new class of applications for Android. Developers can create new applications that offer proximity-based information and services to users, organizations, merchants, and advertisers.

Using the NFC API, applications can respond to NFC tags “discovered” as the user “touches” an NFC-enabled device to elements embedded in stickers, smart posters, and even other devices. When a tag of interest is collected, applications can respond to the tag, read messages from it, and then store the messages, prompting the user as needed.

NFC communication relies on wireless technology in the device hardware, so support for the platform's NFC features on specific devices is determined by their manufacturers.

"The coolest thing about the new Blogger Stats is that it monitors and analyzes your visitor traffic in near-real-time. You can see which posts are getting the most visits and which sites are sending traffic to your blog right now. For example, if a reader shares one of your blog posts on Twitter and the post is getting lots of clicks, you will see a traffic increase in Blogger Stats almost instantly, with the particular Tweet mentioning your post being identified as the traffic source. Of course, traffic data across longer time periods (day/week/month) and all-time historical data are available as well."

Click this link: Add Zemanta gadget. It will take you to a page to add the Zemanta gadget to your blog:
Simply write a couple of sentences and the recommendations and other releated contet will show up automatically. You can preview them and then simply click on an item to add it to the post.

Google caffeine is out

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/06/our-new-search-index-caffeine.html

The new search index Caffeine provides 50 percent fresher results for web searches than our last index.

Caffeine takes up nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage in one database and adds new information at a rate of hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day. You would need 625,000 of the largest iPods to store that much information; if these were stacked end-to-end they would go for more than 40 miles.

Google Ventures

Google Ventures is Google’s venture capital arm.

Which do primarily three things:

  1. Seek out the most innovative and interesting entrepreneurs and companies we can find
  2. Perform in-depth due diligence and invest in those we are most excited about
  3. Do everything we can to help those companies succeed

Google ventures invest for financial return, across all sectors and in all stages of a company’s growth. Google ventures are particularly interested in areas where access to our team, facilities, technology or other resources can help a company become more successful, but we do not limit our investments to those of strategic interest to Google – Google ventures look for companies and people that have the best opportunity to create significant, disruptive and innovative ventures. Sunny Record: Breakthrough for Hybrid Solar Cells

Sunny Record: Breakthrough for Hybrid Solar Cells: "Scientists in Germany have succeeded in developing a method for treating the surface of nanoparticles which greatly improves the efficiency of organic solar cells. The researchers were able to attain an efficiency of 2 percent by using so-called quantum dots composed of cadmium selenide. These measurements, well above the previous efficiency ratings of 1 to 1.8 percent, were confirmed."

Quantum computing leap forward: altering a lone electron without disturbing its neighbors

Quantum computing leap forward: altering a lone electron without disturbing its neighbors: "A major hurdle in the ambitious quest to design and construct a radically new kind of quantum computer has been finding a way to manipulate the single electrons that very likely will constitute the new machines' processing components or 'qubits.' Now, a physicist has discovered how to do just that -- demonstrating a method that alters the properties of a lone electron without disturbing the trillions of electrons in its immediate surroundings. The feat is essential to the development of future varieties of superfast computers with near-limitless capacities for data."

Facebook Eyes Webmail With Project Titan [Facebook]

Facebook Eyes Webmail With Project Titan [Facebook]: "

TechCrunch reports that Facebook is working on a full webmail system to replace their current messaging platform, including full POP and IMAP support and a customized @facebook.com e-mail address. The codename for the new system: Project Titan.

In the TechCrunch post, Arrington suggests that Facebook has been working towards a webmail service for some time, expanding their messaging platform to be searchable and allowing Facebook users to send messages directly to non-Facebook e-mail addresses. The site has also shown interest in giving its users a more accessible and more complete online identity with the recent implementation of personalized URLs and the proliferation of Facebook Connect login on third party sites.

Project Titan would take this effort a step further, giving users a personalized username@facebook.com e-mail address and letting them access it on Facebook itself or independently via POP and IMAP. Facebook already has 175 million people logging into their site each day, but adding a true webmail solution would be a strong step in their transformation from a centralized communications hub to a broader platform for staying connected online. [TechCrunch]

Is This How a Google Tablet Will Look in Action? [Google]

Is This How a Google Tablet Will Look in Action? [Google]: "

It seems that we're getting a first peek at what a Google Chrome OS based tablet may look like. Glen Murphy, Google Chrome's designer, posted this UI concept video along with some images on Google's official Chromium site.

There are several things to keep in mind about this mockup though. For starters, it's only intended as a 'visual explorations of how a Chrome OS tablet UI might look in hardware.' Google Chrome OS is not tied to a single device as far as we know. This would mean that there wouldn't have to be just one single Google tablet such as the concept shown in the video. Whenever we do get to hold a Google tablet, it could be an entirely different experience from what were being teased with right now. [Chrome Source via TechCrunch]
